Finding a babysitter starts with understanding the help your family needs. Before searching, write down your schedule, your children's ages and the responsibilities you want the sitter to handle.

Start With Your Schedule

Are you looking for a regular afternoon sitter, occasional evenings or help during school breaks? Explain the days, hours and expected start date. A clear schedule makes it easier to identify caregivers whose availability fits.

Describe the Responsibilities

Be specific about meals, homework, bedtime and transportation. If driving is part of the role, discuss the vehicle, required restraints, permission and relevant driving arrangements before care begins.

Ask About Relevant Experience

Ask potential sitters about experience with children of similar ages, references and relevant training. Give them an example of a typical situation in your household and ask how they would approach it.

Check References and Discuss Screening

Speak with references when available. Understand what screening has been completed, who completed it and when. A profile statement alone should not replace your own review.

Agree on Expectations

Discuss rates, cancellations, emergency contacts and house rules. Put important details in writing so everyone understands the arrangement.
